Munich

So, I’ve been to Munich!

I actually came back 2 weeks ago but have only just got round to blogging about it…

I had a great time there. I was only there for four days so couldn’t do loads, but I did manage to cram a fair bit in, including:

  • A visit to Schloss Neuschwanstein, the castle used in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • A bike tour around Munich
  • Typical touristy shopping buying postcards and magnets (I always do this when I go abroad, and I left it until the last day this time. I was starting to get a bit anxious that I wouldn’t find anything I wanted to buy…)
  • My first ever Currywurst (pretty nice!)
  • Sampling a Schneeball (like a big ball of pastry with flavouring. It’s nicer than it sounds!)
  • A meal out
  • A visit to a beerhouse

Schloss Neuschwanstein Currywurst!

The one thing that did disappoint me was the pitiful amount of times I spoke German. I tried my best but it just never happened: Everyone who worked in the hostel I stayed in was English, so it would be stupid to talk to them in German; the tour at the castle was in English; our guide for the bike tour was American. The few times I did manage was too basic for it to have any great effect, just a basic ‘eine Semmel bitte. Danke.’ in shops. And even then, as soon as they realised I was English, the shop assistants would swap to English. It was very annoying considering I was hoping to use the trip as a bit of revision!

There was one day when a group of us went to a cafe, and there the waitress let us speak in German, which made a nice change, but I’ve learnt that if you’re not staying with a German family (as I have the other two times I’ve been to Germany) it is unlikely you will get the chance to actually speak much German on a trip to Germany…
