Summer reading

German has always been my stronger language, so after getting a worse mark in that than Spanish this year (only by 1 point, but still), not to mention the fact that I’ll be spending an entire year in Spain brushing up on my Spanish skills, I thought it was about time I did something to improve my German too (or at the very least keep it at its current standard).

With that in mind I’ve decided to make a start on this book:

I bought it in Germany years ago but never got round to reading more than the first page. The last German book I read for pleasure was the translation of the first Harry Potter so it will be nice to read something actually written in the language!

I’m also planning on watching some German films next year to keep it up so if you have any recommendations let me know! 🙂

Home for summer

My box-fuls of belongings have been lugged back home, I’ve moved out of my flat and back home with my family and received my year 2 results (all firsts!).

So that’s it: second year of uni is officially over! And with it marks the halfway point of my degree.

As much as I’d like to spend the next two months doing absolutely nothing I’ve got a lot to do for preparation for my year abroad: reading for my Year Abroad Research Project (or ‘YARP’ to those of us in the know), sorting out a new bank account and phone and wondering how on earth I’m going to fit enough stuff for a whole year into just one suitcase.

But hopefully in between all that I’ll find time to relax and maybe even squeeze in a holiday. There are many things I want to do and places I want to see so with a bit of luck I can tick a few of them off my list.

Fingers crossed!

And even if I don’t manage, I’ve got a full year of sun in Murcia to look forward to!

Year abroad news

As part of my language degree I have to complete a year abroad in my third year – which is starting this September! (I can’t believe how quickly it has gone.) I found out recently that my year abroad will be in Murcia (the South-east of Spain) where I’ll be working as a British Council language assistant, helping to teach English.

I still don’t know what age group I’ll be working with (although I’m hoping for high school age) or the town or school, but I’m very excited so far and thrilled that I got my first choice of region!

I chose Murcia because of its size – it’s not too big, so won’t be flooded with English and tourists (which, from experience, makes it really difficult to try to use Spanish) but not too small, so there will be enough to do and good transport links with other places in Spain. Plus, it has gorgeous weather!

The year abroad is probably going to be the most exciting part of my degree and one of the main reasons I started this blog in the first place, so from now on I’m really going to try to blog regularly. (I’ve even put a recurrent reminder in my phone.)

The next time I write will probably be when I hear more news about where I’ll be going, but it might be before then if I have something good to write about!

But that’s it for now, so see you next time!
